Rocky Mountain Low

Hello, my friend the Blog. It's been several weeks since my last post and much has occurred. The Florida watch has not changed. The Chief remains in day-to-day status with most things positive. His mental health appears strong but his physical abilities continue to deteriorate. Falls are more frequent, but so far he's dodged any stumbles that adversely impact him. Sharon and Pearl continue to provide excellent support. His autobiography is just about finished. He was able to see the press run of his book last week at Southeast Printing in Stuart. His enthusiasm for sharing his story continues and his undeniable will-to-live is admirable.
Yesterday, I returned from an enjoyable ski trip with the Dunelands Ski Club of Northwest Indiana. We had wonderful weather and I was able to ski two days of seven.
The problem was I suffered two significant wounds on consecutive days. First, on Sunday, I consciously decided to fit my rental boots to my smaller foot for better control. Bad choice, Ricky. I ended Sunday with a totally bruised big toe on my left foot. It's an injury that will result in loss of toenail and discomfort for many months. Next, on Monday, I went with a looser fitting boot for my left foot and all hell broke out on my right shin. I suffered a 'friction burn' that resulted in a wound about two thirds the size of a credit card. Luckily, Doctor Gary Babcoke, a retired GP from Gary was able to inspect the wound every twelve hours for the first three days. He said it's worse than some second-degree burns he's seen in his practice over many years. Doc sidelined me immediately. No more skiing he said, way too much risk of infection and further irritation. It was a real blow to me.
Fortunately, I called Chuck Barton and he was able to drive out from Spring Ranch and rescue me for two days. But here's the real bummer. I didn't feel the wound until I removed my boot. The reason, there's a real good chance I am diabetic like my father and, I believe, grandfather. Consequently, I am scheduling a Doctor's appointment to determine what's going on with my body and what the next steps are to better health. It is really a mentally depressing issue. For the first time, I know my health is failing and I must do something about it immediately.
To sum up the week, it was a real Rocky Mountain Low.
